Working Paper Reducing ergonomic risks at mixed-model assembly lines by job rotation scheduling

چکیده
The proverb “a change is as good as a rest” expresses one of the main advantages of job rotation. In this article, we examine ways to set-up effective job rotation schedules that balance ergonomic risks among workers in mixed-model assembly lines. We show that the problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. Therefore, the development of specialized solution methods is important. Exploiting the problem structure, we propose a fast and effective smoothing heuristic which can be integrated into solution methods for computing initial solutions and/or as a local re-optimization procedure. We find that integrating the smoothing heuristic into a suited tabu search approach is particularly recommendable. In computational experiments, this combination of approaches is able to solve almost all instances of a practical data set in very short computation times of some seconds, whereas the standard solver FICO Xpress and the best-known heuristic from literature perform considerably worse concerning computation time and solution quality.

Background and aims: The job safety is one of the necessary aspects of efficiency in humane resource manangement of every organization, and if organizations enable to reduce the rate of job accidents and undesirable stress, then performance of workers become more efficient. Hence, job rotation is as good as a rest to increase efficiency. The aim of this research is to design an appropriate job ...
متن کاملPostural Ergonomic Risk Assessment (Pera) in The Workers of the Automobile Parts Assembly Line: A New Observational Method for the Cube Model
Assembly lines are associated with health risk and musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the upper limbs. The aim of this study was to analyze three risk factors of posture, duration and force by using the postural ergonomic risk assessment (PERA) method in the workers of the assembly unit of automobile parts. Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in th...
متن کاملJob rotation in assembly lines employing disabled workers
In this paper we consider the programming of job rotation in the Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem. The motivation for this study comes from the designing of assembly lines in sheltered work centers for the disabled, where workers have different task execution times. In this context, the well-known training aspects associated with job rotation are particularly desired. We pr...
متن کاملModelling and solving the job shop scheduling Problem followed by an assembly stage considering maintenance operations and access restrictions to machines
This paper considers job shop scheduling problem followed by an assembly stage and Lot Streaming (LS). It is supposed here that a number of products have been ordered to be produced. Each product is assembled with a set of several parts. The production system includes two stages. The first stage is a job shop to produce parts. Each machine can process only one part at the same time. The second ...
متن کاملDesign of assembly lines with the concurrent consideration of productivity and upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders using linear models
The productivity of assembly lines is considerably affected by the health condition of assembly workers, and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are common occupational diseases among assembly workers due to repetitive motions or heavy working loads. The conventional approaches to decreasing WMSD risks in the assembly lines include slowing the work-pace or applying job rotations. The...
